Year 7 Students Enjoy an Exciting Day at Paignton Zoo

19th November 2024

Fifteen Year 7 students had the fantastic opportunity to spend a day at Paignton Zoo as part of an event organised by the Devon School Sports Games. The focus of the day was to enhance their communication, teamwork, and problem-solving skills through engaging activities and challenges.

The adventure began upon arrival when students were tasked with navigating to “Matobo Camp” to find their instructions for the day. This initial challenge encouraged collaboration and set the stage for the activities to come.

Once at the camp, the students were split into two groups, each given a trail to follow. Their mission was to locate specific animals and answer related questions. For instance, did you know the Binturong’s urine smells like popcorn? Along the way, students compiled a list of 10 interesting facts and recorded animals listed as endangered species, deepening their understanding of wildlife conservation.

Both groups reconvened at the wobble bridge before breaking for lunch. Afterward, the students enjoyed some well-earned fun at the play area, climbing and exploring like the baboons they had observed earlier in the day.

As the visit drew to a close, the students met with the event organisers, where they were awarded certificates of achievement and a voucher for an ice cream treat. With ice creams in hand, the group spent an additional hour exploring the zoo at their leisure, soaking in the sights and making the most of their time.

The day was a perfect blend of learning, fun, and adventure. It left everyone with fond memories and a deeper appreciation for teamwork, problem-solving, and the natural world.
