What is the Ten Tors Challenge?
This Challenge for the youth of the south west has been organised by the armed forces on Dartmoor every year since 1960 with the exception of 2001 when an outbreak of Foot and Mouth disease caused its cancellation and 2020 and 2021 due to Covid-19.
It starts and finishes at Okehampton Army Camp, is open to 2400 teenagers who in teams of six can according to their age attempt to complete a two day expedition (including an overnight camp) over either 35 (Year 9 and 10), 45 (Year 11 and 12) or 55 miles (Year 12 and 13) across the open moor.
The aim of the Challenge is for the team to be totally self-sufficient for the weekend and to complete their route as a full team of six before the Sunday deadline of 1700hrs. Teams suffering casualties can continue on their allocated route as long as there are four members still walking but if numbers fall below that then the teams are ‘crashed out’ and returned to Okehampton by road. Although the event has been abandoned in the past due to extreme weather it normally continues whether the sun is shining or if the famous Dartmoor mists and rain make condition rather more inclement!

The above dates are the training dates for all 35 mile Ten Tors participants.
