Kingsteignton Students Working with Exeter University on Tackling UN Sustainable Development Goals

Teign School  is honoured to be the first school involved with the ‘Engineering the Future’ programme being run by the University of Exeter’s engineering department.

Students were tasked with coming up with a creative solution to a world problem, based on the United Nations (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs.)  The goals range from eliminating poverty and hunger, to ensuring all people have access to clean water and affordable energy.

The students' ideas will now be taken to 2nd Year Engineering and Entrepreneurship undergraduates at the university, who are going to use Teign students' proposed solutions as inspiration to create a prototype and business as part of their degree course.

The BEng Engineering and Entrepreneurship qualification is a pioneering programme designed to support innovators and entrepreneurs in the fields of mechanical and electronic engineering.  Some of the undergraduates will also be visiting Teign School in the future to help students learn more about engineering.

The University of Exeter isone of the very few universities to be both a member of the Russell Group and have a Gold award from the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), evidence of their established international reputation for excellence in both teaching and research.

Lucie Wagner, Head of School at Teign Academy, said:

“It’s brilliant that Teign School is the first one to work with the University of Exeter on itsnew ‘Engineering the Future’ programme.  The students came up with some really innovative ideas and are so excited that these will now be developed by Engineering and Entrepreneurship undergraduates.  We can’t wait to welcome the university students to the school to learn more about their studies.”

Matthew Shanks, CEO of Education South West said:

“It’s great that Teign School is working so closely with the University of Exeter on this programme which encourages young people to think creatively and positively about solving the world’s problems.  The partnership is also beneficial as hearing all about the work the undergraduates are undertaking will help inspire Teign students to think about their own futures.”
